REJUVENAN SCIENCE I - CALORIE CONNECTION AND LONGEVITY Severely restricting an organisms' calorie intake for a long term is the most successful method for extending life span and health. This has been known for a long time and is still the only method absolutely proven to work In humans evidence for this was first reported by Dr. Keyes about 70 years ago who noted that persons in primitive jail conditions had a lower incidence of heart disease, cancer and diabetes than normal populations. That this is so and that low calorie intake provides better health and longer life span has been reported in many organisms from flies to monkeys and almost certainly to man. To be functional, the calorie restriction is in the area of 30% to 40% of what is considered normal. Obviously this is not easily accomplished and should not be tried without serious medical advice. It is not our aim to recommend such action. Fortunately it appears that severe calorie restriction is not the only way to life extension. There appear to be at least three other ways in which life extension can be influenced:
If humans are to benefit from the life extension and health benefits of calorie restriction, starving is not a practical option. Others ways are needed. Fortunately, it was discovered that calorie restriction/longevity works by activating a series of Genes/Proteins called Sirtuins and that several simple molecules can accomplish the same thing as starvation on health and longevity. These molecules include::
According to all reported literature resveratrol and NAD work essentially the same way as calorie restriction to extend life. Niacin works by acting as a source of NAD. II - MITOCHONDRIA DEGENERATION AND AGING CHANGES According to Dr. Densan Harnan and, more recently, to Professor Bruce Ames at the University of California, Berkeley, it is damage to the mitochondria that lead to degenerative changes and, consequently, to some diseases and aging. These changes result from cumulative free radical, oxidant induced damage to the DNA and mitochondrial membranes and result in less efficient mitochondria and less efficient production of energy. This in turn leads to damage and changes in body organs and leads to disease and changes associated with aging changes. FOR MORE INFORMATION PLEASE CLICK HERE TO EMAIL QUESTION OR CALL DR. PANTEL AT 800-937-4881 III - CALORIE RESTRICTION, AGING GENES, LONGEVITY GENES, FREE RADICALS METABOLIC DETERIORATION In the past, scientists believed that aging was due to deterioration of organs/cells from accumulating metabolic changes in the body and from the action of "Aging Genes" which bring changes in the body leading to termination of life. The Aging Genes idea has been abandoned for lack of evidence and scientists now believe that aging is a results of organ and cell degeneration and malfunction due to cumulative, harmful changes caused by anti-oxidants and disease. A - Longevity Genes (Survival Genes) and Longevity Starting several years ago researchers started to see evidence of Longevity Genes as responsible for life extension. The Longevity Genes belong to a group called Sirtuins genes/proteins and appear to have evolved to allow metabolic changes in organisms (from yeast to worms to flies to mice and, almost certainly in humans) to allow survival in severe environmental stress such as severe and prolonged hunger, thirst, heat etc. These metabolic survival changes have a corollary effect - i.e they help enhance life prolongation and prevention of diseases such as cancer, diabetes, arthritis, brain deterioration and others. B - Mitochodrial Metabolic Deterioration In 1953 Dr. A. Harman suggested that free radicals damage body cells and cause degenerative changes in the organism. It is now widely accepted that free radical, oxidative damages to cell components damage proteins, lipids and DNA and lead to deterioration of organs and functions. It is believed that accumulation of such oxidative damage to the DNA, proteins and mitochondrial structure reduces the efficiency of the body functions and bring about old age degenerative changes. Mitochondria are cell organelles that produce the cells' energy and have a very sophisticated membrane structure to carry out this energy production... the energy that enables heart to beat, brain to think, muscles to contract, etc. Consequently any insufficiency in mitochondrial function will have whole body consequences. Scientists at Univ. of California, Berkeley, working with animals, attempted to prevent/correct this mitochondrial damage by introducing Acetyl L-Carnitine to their diet. Within weeks of this, the animals became more energetic both physically and mentally. Unfortunately, at the same time, the improved animals continued to produce levels of oxidants at higher rates than before the special diet. Knowing their chemistry, the group added Alpha Lipoic acid to the Acetyl L-Carnitine diet and, whala!, mitochondrial structure and function were significantly improved AND the amount of free radical/oxidants decreased significantly. C - Longevity, Resveratrol, NAD/Niacin, Acetyl L- Carnitine and Alpha Lipoic Acid The wonderful thing with good science is that correct concepts always fit with each other. In this instance we have a GENETIC explanation for health and longevity correction, i.e genes through stimulation by NAD or Niacin (not nicotinamide or synthetic niacin) as a provider of NAD start a chain of events leading to a longer, healthier life. At the same time, there is a theory that Acetyl L- Carnitine with Alpha Lipoic Acid do the same thing for health and life extension ... AND THE 2 CONCEPTS ARE LINKED ... calorie restriction, resveratrol, NAD/Niacin on one hand, mitochondria status on the other ... LINKED BY THE NAD FACTOR! IT WOULD TAKE BOOKS TO DESCRIBE ALL THE CELL FUNCTION OF NAD ... OF INTEREST TO US IS THE NAD WHICH TWEAKS THE SIRTUIN GENES TO INITIATE A CASCADE OF BENEFICIAL LONGEVITY CHANGES IS THE SAME CHEMICAL THAT IS CENTRAL TO THE PROPER FUNCTION OF MITOCHONDRIA ... IT IS THE ENERGY GENERATION 'SPARK PLUG' IN MITOCHONDRIA! So, there is evidence that Resveratrol, NAD. Niacin, Acetyl L-Carnitine and alpha Lipoic Acid seem to help inhibit, and possibly, reverse aging changes and to fight various diseases. These are all rather common biochemicals and can be taken as supplements to a good diet. With Rejuvenan, we have attempted to provide:
We have taken the mitochondrial repair approach AND the genetic tweaking approach in order to create supplements that will affect mitochondria for the better and tweak the genes to cause body responses that will help maintain a healthy, steady state of health. The supplements created are:
FASTING - we have tried a modified form of calorie restriction and found that, at least, it caused us to lose some weight and to feel better. It is not anything revolutionary ... rather it is very simple. But we must stress that general, severe calorie restriction is not to be lightly taken and not for everybody because:
ANYTHING, OTHER THAN TAKING WATER, ONE DAY A WEEK! WE FOUND THAT BLUE MONDAY IS THE BEST DAY FOR THIS BECAUSE WE GENERALLY OVER EAT OVER THE WEEK END. Before trying it, discuss it with a physician or other specialist If you try it, click here to let us know your experience with it. |
