FIBER(S) - There are several classification of fiber. The most pertinent  is that proposes by the Institute of
Medicine. This separates fiber into 2 groups:
  • Dietary  Fibers - that occurs naturally in plant food
  • Functional fiber that is synthetic or  isolated fiber and added to foods or supplements

DIETARY FIBER
- Dietary, in this instance does not mean that they provide nutrients to the body. Rather,  they
promote bowel health and Function This category includes:
  1. Cellulose - Found in all plant parts, from trunks to fruit to leaves, to roots. Cellulose does not form gels or
swell when eaten or placed in water. They are resistant to bacterial fermentation .
  2. Hemicellulose - As Cellulose, this fiber is found in plants and is relatively similar to Cellulose although
some have been shown to  swell in water or when eaten.
  3. Lignin - Found in  seeds and cell walls of woody plants. Like Cellulose it does not form gels or swell  when
    placed in water.
  4. Beta-Glucans - These are soluble fibers and found in high amounts in oats and barley These are easily
fermented by colon bacteria and produce some nutrients and gas.
  5. Pectins - Pectins are particularly abundant in fruit and berries.  Not all are  soluble in water.  === Gums -
gums are soluble fibers and swell in water and when eaten. Guar gum is fermented by colon bacteria and
    produce nutrient and gas.
  6. Inulin and Oligofructose - They occur in large amount in onions and Jerusalem artichokes. They are
fermentable by colon bacteria and produce some nutrients and gas.
  7. Mucilages - Psyllium being one of these, they swell in water. -===

FUNCTIONAL FIBER - These have been defined by the Institute of Medicine as  consisting "of isolated, non-
digestible carbohydrates that have beneficial physiological effects on humans". These fibers can be isolated or
extracted from natural plant or animal sources or may be manufactured or synthesized. Included in this
category are:
  1. Psyllium - a viscous mucilage that is isolated from psyllium seed.
  2. Chitin and Chitosan- these are extracted from the shells of crabs or lobsters.
  3. Fructosacharides,, Polydextrose and Polyols -  Synthetic fibers that are used as food additives.
Most of us think of fiber as 'bulk'. This is far from the truth.  Researchers seem to find evidence that fiber:
  1. Helps lower Cholesterol - especially  flax, legumes, oats, Even the FDA conditionally recommends these for
    cholesterol control
  2. .Controlling high blood sugar.
  3. Heart disease.
  4. Diabetes.
  5. Colorectal cancer .
  6. Breast cancer.
  7. Diverticulitis.
  8. Weight control
  9. Irritable Bowel Syndrome
We will continue to post more, specific health information on fiber benefits and sources. Keep in touch.
