Rather they are nutrients that the body utilizes to make other chemicals that it needs. There are 2 essential fatty acids, Omega-3 and Omega-a. By essential is meant that the body cannot make them and must obtain them from other sources - in this instance, plants. There are essentially 3 types of Omega-3 fatty acids.(more on Omega-6s later):
SO, NO ALA = NO EPA OR DHA - EXCEPT FROM COLD WATER D FISH. ( FISH CANNOT MAKE THEM EITHER BUT THEY GET IT FROM ALGAE) -- AND WE CAN GET IT BY EATING THE FISH. FUNCTION ALA - The only known function of ALA in humans is to serve as a source for the synthesis of EPA and DHA. In other words, no ALA = no EPA and no DHA (although these can be obtained from some foods, especially cold water fish. (The fish get ALA from microscopic plants that they eat and convert it to EPA and DHA ... as we do) EPA - Excessive Allergic and Immunological Responses. These are present in cell membranes and play a critical role as chemical and structural agents in immune and inflammatory responses. In a normal, balanced food intake the ratio of the Omega-a ) and Omega-3 would be 1:1 or 1:2. The ratio in the average American diet it is more than 10:1 - not very healthy because this creates imbalances in immune and inflammatory responses leading to exaggerated allergic and immune response type of diseases. |
