RESVERATROL -  NICOTINIC ACID - LIPOIC ACID -  ACETYL L- CARNITINE - SPROUTS
RESVERATROL    -  More than the "French Paradox"

SUMMARY
Resveratrol is a polyphenolic phytonutrient  found in the dark, red  grape skins, red wine (red grape juice is not as
good a source as whole red grapes or wine). It is also found, in lower quantities, in mulberries and peanuts
(especially in boiled peanuts),

BIOLOGICAL ACTIVITY
Resveratrol is best know for its suspected role in the "French Paradox" - the low incidence of heart disease in the
French even though they eat a high fat diet. Resveratrol has also been linked to:
  • anti-oxidant activity
  • estrogenic and anti-estrogenic activity
  • gene activation for the production of anti cancer chemicals
  • heart protective effects
  • inhibition of tumor formation and spread
  • anti-inflammatory effects
  • stimulation of beneficial nitric oxide formation
  • platelet aggregation
  • caloric restriction mimic of anti-aging, life extending properties.
LIFE EXTENSION AND HOW RESVERATROL WORKS
In order to delve further into Resveratrol function and longevity we must understand the calorie restriction
connection to  longevity: Calorie restriction:
  • Seems to work by stimulating the SIR Family of Genes, now called "Longevity Genes". Stimulation of Sir
protein (Sirtuins) production by these genes seems to be critical to life extension effects.
  • Activates a gene called PNCI which produces an enzyme that rids cell of nicotinamide, a small molecule
    similar to Vitamin B3.
  • Nicotinamide normally represses the SIR group of genes ... negatively effecting life extension
  • Causes increase in respiration in cells and so produces NAD and decreases the amount of NADH
  • NAD, nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, is a small, ubiquitous molecule that is a critical factor in many
    metabolic reaction in cells
  • It is known that NAD is essential to the function of the SIR genes ... without NAD the longevity genes cannot
    function effectively.
  • NADH is know to inhibit the activity of the longevity genes

Dr. D.C. Sinclair, Dr. L. Guarente*  at Harvard Medical School and MIT, respectively, and others have determined
that resveratrol  seems to act by activating  the same genes as calorie restriction  i.e. the Sirtuin family of genes
that are responsible for survival in response to severe calorie restriction, extreme heat, drought etc. Actually, they
categorize  resveratrol (and fisetin, among others), as a  Sirtuin Activating Compound.

Thus, taking resveratrol seems to do  exactly the same thing as caloric restriction and does it under normal calorie
intake.
